CompTIA Security+

A foundational cybersecurity credential for understanding common threats, security controls, identity, risk, secure architecture, and operational security practices.

Last verified: 2026-09-01

Overview

CompTIA Security+ is a vendor-neutral cybersecurity certification that validates foundational skills used to protect systems, networks, applications, and data. It is designed for IT professionals who need a broad understanding of modern security concepts and the ability to apply security principles in practical workplace situations. The SY0-701 exam covers general security concepts; threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations; security architecture; security operations; and security program management and oversight. Candidates are expected to understand areas such as access control, identity and authentication, network and cloud security, incident response, vulnerability management, risk, governance, cryptography, and security monitoring. Security+ can serve as a foundation for professionals moving from general IT into cybersecurity and for those working in technical roles that include security responsibilities. Because it is vendor-neutral, the knowledge applies across a wide range of operating systems, cloud platforms, networks, and security technologies.

Recommended experience
CompTIA recommends Network+ level knowledge and about two years of experience working in a security or systems administrator role. Candidates should be comfortable with core networking, operating systems, access control, basic security operations, and troubleshooting before attempting the exam.
